Hello, I had a chow/australian shepherd mix that I got from a shelter when he was 7 months old. He also had severe separation anxiety and was very skittish. We actually had to "Furber-ize" him if you are familiar with that term - a term named after a doctor to help get your baby to sleep through the night. We gated Roger in the kitchen and went around the corner to the living room where he could not see us and talked to him for 3 minutes. Then we did that again a few times. A little while later we did it for 5 minutes. Then 7, then 10. After a long day, we stopped. The next day (we did this on a weekend) we left the house for a few minutes. Then a few more minutes. Then up to 15 minutes. OUr dog did not rip the door off his crate (but he did eat the couch once). We ended up making a place for him in the basement with his crate, carpet, toys and a picture of the dogs playing poker over his crate. This is where he would stay when we were out (and he prefered this place up until he died this summer (at the age of 9 from cancer) and he went there happily when he knew we were leaving. It did take awhile, but if you can find a safe secure place to keep him and do it gradually, it did work (and the techniqgu also worked getting my 3 kids to sleep through the night too!). Hope it helps.
